14 rupees = 1400 p
12 rupees 40 paise = 1200 + 40 = 1240 p
∴ 14 rupees : 12 rupees 40 paise
= 1400 p : 1240 p
= `(1400 ÷ 40) /(1240 ÷ 40)`
= `35/31`
= 35 : 31 ...(HCF of 1400 and 1240 = 40)
