Find the nature of the roots of the following quadratic equation: 

x2 – x + 2 = 0

Solution

The given equation is x2 – x + 2 = 0

This is of the form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a = 1, b = –1 and c = 2 

∴ Discriminant, D = b2 – 4ac

= (–1)2 – 4 × 1 × 2

= 1 – 8

= –7 < 0 

Hence, the given equation has no real roots.
