Find the nature of the roots of the following quadratic equation: 

5x2 – 4x + 1 = 0

Solution

The given equation is 5x2 – 4x + 1 = 0

This is of the form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a = 5, b = –4 and c = 1 

∴ Discriminant, D = b2 – 4ac

= (–4)2 – 4 × 5 × 1

= 16 – 20

= –4 < 0

Hence, the given equation has no real roots.
