Find the gravitational potential energy of 1 kg mass kept at a height of 5 m above the ground. Calculate its kinetic energy when it falls and hits the ground. Take g = 10 m s-2.

Solution

Mass, m = 1 kg

Height, h = 5m

Gravitational potential energy = Force × height

= mgh = 1 × 10 × 5 = 50J

When the mass hits the ground, its entire Potential energy is converted to Kinetic energy.

Hence, the Kinetic energy of mass on hitting the ground = 50 J.
