Find the discriminant of the following equation:

(x – 1)(2x – 1) = 0

Solution

2x2 – 3x + 1 = 0 

Comparing it with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we get 

a = 2, b = –3 and c = 1 

∴ Discriminant, D = b2 – 4ac

= (–3)2 – 4 × 2 × 1

= 9 – 8

= 1
