Solution

Wheelchair basketball is a team sport adapted for athletes who use wheelchairs. It developed in the United States in the 1940s, with injured Second World War service members among its early players. The game follows rules similar to basketball and is played by two teams of five on court.

Players use specially designed sports wheelchairs, which are built for speed, balance and safe movement. Players propel their chairs, dribble, pass and shoot to score in the opposing team’s basket. A player may push the wheelchair up to twice while holding the ball; after that, the player must dribble, pass or shoot. As in basketball, teamwork, passing, ball control and shooting are important skills.

Wheelchair basketball gives athletes with physical disabilities an opportunity to compete and develop fitness, coordination and team skills. The chapter notes that its rules are approximately similar to those of basketball.
