Let the number be x. 
According to the question, 
\[5x - 5 = 2x + 4\]
\[\text{ or }5x - 2x = 4 + 5\]
\[\text{ or }3x = 9\]
\[\text{ or }x = \frac{9}{3}\]
or x = 3
Thus, the number is 3.
