Solution
Family is a universal social institution as it exists in all societies. A child’s first interaction is with their family. As a social institution, it performs several functions. Some of the primary functions of the family are as follows:
- Procreation: Family introduces legitimacy to procreation, promoting the continuation of the human race.
- Provision for home: The family provides a home for its members to return to after a long day. Raising children at home provides a sense of stability and belonging.
- Agent of socialisation: The family is the primary socialisation agency for newborns. Children teach children basic social survival skills, such as language. Family members pass on cultural and value-laden traditions to new generations.
- Status ascribing function: It is true that a person can work hard and rise to their own position in life, but a person’s birth into a certain family dictates some fundamental aspects of their personality and status, which can then either help or hurt them in life.
- Stable satisfaction of sexual needs: Through the social institution of marriage, families control people’s sexual behaviour. Therefore, one of the most crucial aspects of family life is sexual fulfilment.
