They undergo intensive training, participate in competitions and devote most of their time to improving their performance. Sports also becomes their career and source of income.

On the other hand, some people remain amateur players because they consider sports mainly as a hobby, recreation and means of maintaining fitness. They may have studies, jobs or other responsibilities and therefore cannot devote full time to training. They usually do not depend on sports for their livelihood.

Thus, skill, dedication, training, time available, career goals and financial opportunities influence whether a person becomes a professional or remains an amateur player.
