Solution

Sodium and magnesium are highly reactive metals placed near the top of the reactivity series. Their metal oxides are very stable and cannot be reduced by carbon. These metals have a higher affinity (attraction) for oxygen than carbon does. Thus, carbon cannot strip the oxygen away to reduce these metal oxides to free metals.
