A solution of cane sugar does not conduct electricity because cane sugar is a covalent compound. When dissolved in water, it stays as neutral molecules and does not form free ions to carry an electric charge.

On the other hand, common salt (NaCl) is an ionic compound formed by the transfer of electrons. When dissolved in water, it dissociates into free-moving sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl) ions. These mobile ions are free to move and conduct electricity through the solution.
