The first, second, and third periods permit one time-out each, while the fourth period allows for two time-outs. In basketball, a time-out is one full minute long. A time-out in athletics is a stoppage in play. This stops the game clock and enables the coaches of either team to interact with the team to decide on strategy, boost morale, etc.
