Simple tissues are permanent tissues made of one type of structurally and functionally similar cells.
- Parenchyma: Living, thin-walled cells that commonly store food and fill spaces; some types photosynthesise or store air or water.
- Collenchyma: Living cells with unevenly thickened corners. They support young plant parts while allowing flexibility.
- Sclerenchyma: Dead cells with thick, lignified walls. They provide strength, rigidity and protection.
