Solution

Football has a history of more than a thousand years. Early games resembling football were played in different cultures; the oldest version is believed to have been played in villages of ancient China. In medieval Britain, village games could be rough, with kicking, carrying and handling the ball.

  1. Separate forms of the game: Rugby and association football shared common roots. In 1863, the rugby football group separated in England, helping to establish distinct forms of the sport, including association football, rugby football and Gaelic football.
  2. Common rules: In the same year, representatives met to create rules acceptable to schools and clubs. The Football Association was formed in England and became the sport’s first governing body. The game gradually developed into the modern, organised sport.
  3. Competitions and international organisation: The Football Association Challenge Cup began in 1872 and is regarded as the world’s oldest football championship. FIFA, the international governing body, was founded in Paris in 1904. The game is commonly called “soccer” in some countries.
  4. Growth in India: The British introduced football to India in the nineteenth century. The Durand Cup began in Shimla in 1888, Mohun Bagan was formed in 1889, and the IFA Shield was founded in 1893. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) was established in 1937 and affiliated with FIFA in 1948.
