A conurbation is a large, extended urban area that develops when two or more cities or towns expand and merge into one continuous built-up area. Although the original cities may retain their administrative identities, they function as a single urban unit in terms of economy, infrastructure, transport, and population movement.

Conurbations are usually the result of rapid urbanisation, industrial development, and the spread of metropolitan influence into surrounding regions.
