Solution
- Equipment required: A step or bench of 20 inches (50 cm) height for boys and 16 inches (40 cm) for girls, a stopwatch, and a metronome.
- Starting the test: The subject steps up and down on the bench at a rate of 30 steps per minute (one complete step up and down = one step). The rhythm is maintained with the help of a metronome.
- Duration: The test continues for 5 minutes (300 seconds) or until the subject is exhausted and cannot maintain the rhythm.
- Recovery period: After completing the test, the subject sits down immediately. The pulse rate is counted for 30 seconds at three intervals:
- 1 to 1½ minutes
- 2 to 2½ minutes
- 3 to 3½ minutes after exercise
- Purpose: The pulse counts are used to calculate the Physical Fitness Index (PFI), which indicates the efficiency of the heart and lungs (cardio-vascular fitness).
