Solution

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce their own food using sunlight, carbon dioxide CO2, and water. CO2 and water are converted into carbohydrates with the evolution of oxygen. The photosynthesis reaction can be represented by the following equation:

\[\ce{6CO2 + 6H2O ->[Sunlight] C6H12O6 + 6O2}\]

The three main events of Photosynthesis:

  1. Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll.
  2. Conversion of light energy to chemical energy and splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen (Photochemical Phase).
  3. Reduction of carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrates.
