Explain the history of Judo.

1. Origin: Judo originated in Japan. Jigoro Kano founded the sport in 1882 and is regarded as the father of Judo.
2. Development of the system: Kano reviewed principles of attack and defence and shaped Judo into a system involving throws, holds, choking, joint locks and pinning. It became both a method of self-defence and a form of physical exercise.
3. Olympic inclusion: The men’s Judo competition was introduced at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. The women’s event was added at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992.
