Solution

  1. The 12-16 group compounds are semiconducting materials formed by combining elements from Group 12 (II) of the periodic table (like Zn, Cd) with elements from Group 16 (VI) (like S, Se, Te). These compounds are often called II-VI semiconductors.
  2. Examples of group 12-16 compounds include zinc sulphide (ZnS), cadmium sulphide (CdS), cadmium selenide (CdSe), and mercury (II) telluride (HgTe).
  3. These compounds are ideal for optoelectronic applications such as light emission and detection.
  4. These compounds, with their direct band gaps, excel in both light-emitting and light-absorbing applications.
  5. These compounds discover their application in LEDs, laser diodes, solar cells, and photodetectors.

Why does the electrical conductivity of semiconductors increase with rise in temperature?

Assertion: Semiconductors are solids with conductivities in the intermediate range from 10–6 – 104 ohm–1m–1.
Reason: Intermediate conductivity in semiconductor is due to partially filled valence band.
