1. A windward slope is the side of a hill, mountain, or range that faces the prevailing winds and therefore receives the first uplift of moist air. As air is forced upward along the slope, it cools and condenses, producing higher precipitation and cloudiness on the windward side compared with the sheltered leeward side.

Because of this orographic effect, windward slopes often support wetter, denser vegetation (for example, tropical evergreen forests on the western side of the Western Ghats) and richer soils, while the leeward side lies in a rain shadow with drier conditions. Windward slopes also experience more weathering and runoff, which influences erosion patterns and human land use such as agriculture and settlement. In summary, the windward slope is the wind-exposed, wetter face of elevated terrain that shapes local climate, ecosystems, and hydrology.
