Solution
“Mintonette” was the initial name for volleyball. William G. Morgan, a YMCA physical education instructor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, invented it in 1895. Morgan created the game to be a less intense alternative to basketball, making it suited for older YMCA members. Morgan drew inspiration from badminton for his new game, which had a net and rallying motion. In 1896, an observer noticed players “volleying” the ball, which led to the sport’s official rebranding as volleyball.
