A lob shot is a high, arcing stroke played over an opponent (often when they are positioned near the net) intended to land deep in the backcourt and force them onto the defensive; a good lob clears the opponent’s reach at midcourt and pushes them back to the baseline. It’s described in racket-sport terminology simply as “a ball hit high in the air attempting to land behind the opposition player,” and is commonly used in tennis and badminton to change court position or finish a point.
