Solution

In this reaction, arene diazonium salts undergo a nucleophilic substitution reaction. The reaction involves displacement of the diazo group by – Cl/– Br/ –CN atom. The reaction can be represented as,
\[\ce{Ar - N^+_2X- ->[CuX/HX] Ar - X + N2 (X = -Cl, -Br)}\]
\[\ce{Ar - N^+_2X- ->[CuCN/KCN] Ar - CN + N2}\]

e.g. Preparation of cyanobenzene from benzene diazonium chloride.
