1. Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own cells and tissues.
2. The immune system fails to distinguish between self and non-self antigens.
3. It produces autoantibodies or activates immune cells against the body's own tissues.
4. This causes inflammation and damage to affected organs.
5. Examples: Rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and myasthenia gravis.
