Clans refer to a number of families who are related in blood and who trace their descent from real or imagined person, object or being. Most Indian tribes are divided into exogamous clans and lineages. Clans are basis for strong kinship bonds.

Example: Clans of tribes living in Himalayan region, Middle Indian region, Western-Indian region, South Indian region and the Island region
