  6. Wealthy merchants in Italian cities such as Genoa and Venice also supported the Crusades, hoping to open up trade routes in Central Asia.
  7. The first Crusade began in 1096 C.E.
  8. Later, Pope Eugenius III gave another call for a Crusade, with support from King Louis VII of France and King Conrad III of Germany.
