Explain nitrogen fixation and give the reaction.
Explain

Solution
Atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) is highly inert and cannot be absorbed directly by plants. The process of converting atmospheric nitrogen into useful nitrogenous compounds (like nitrates) that plants can easily assimilate is called nitrogen fixation.
Natural Reactions (Atmospheric Fixation during Lightning):
\[\ce{N2 + O2 ->[Lightning (3000°C)] 2NO }\]
\[\ce{2NO + O2 -> 2NO2}\]
\[\ce{4NO2 + 2H2O + O2}\]
