- In football, a “dropped ball” occurs when the referee stops play for a non-foul reason, such as a player’s injury or the ball being defective.
- The referee places the ball where it was when play was halted and signals for one player from each team to contest control. This restarts the game and is supposed to be a fair way to resume play.
