Solution 1

Retting is the method by which the jute fibre is removed from the stem by submerging it in flowing water for 20-25 days and then it is dried in the sun.

Solution 2

Retting is a controlled microbial process used in fibre production in which harvested stalks of plants such as jute, hemp, and flax are soaked in water to dissolve the natural gums, pectin, and tissues that hold the fibres together. Bacteria and fungi tear down these cellular adhesives over a few days or weeks without damaging the tough, woody fibres. Once decomposition is complete, the stalks are taken from the water, allowing the high-quality textile fibres to be easily peeled, washed and dried for use in rope, twine or hessian sack production.
