Solution

  1. Terrain: The plains have encouraged a higher density of population as compared to the mountain regions. The steep slope of the Himalayas restricts the availability of land for agriculture, the development of transport, industries and other economic activities, which may tend to discourage the concentration of population and its proper growth. So, the great plains of North India are a land of an extremely gentle slope and offer great opportunities for the growth of agriculture, transport, and industries.
  2. Industries: Industrial growth offers massive employment opportunities and acts as a great magnet to attract people. This results in higher population density. Industrial areas are invariably associated with areas of high population densities. One of the major causes of population density in West Bengal, Gujarat and Maharashtra is the phenomenal growth of industries.
  3. Urbanisation: Urbanisation and population concentration go hand in hand and are closely related to each other. Agriculture-based rural areas do not provide employment to all the people living there. Even a small-scale cottage industry fails to provide employment to the entire rural folk. Urban areas provide a vast scope for employment in industries, trade, transport, and services.
  4. Water Bodies: The availability of water is a crucial factor in shaping the population distribution of any region. Water is essential for various uses such as agriculture, industrial activities, transportation, and household needs. Rivers, being the main source of fresh and drinkable water, naturally attract large populations. As a result, river valleys tend to have high population concentrations.
  5. Mineral Resources: Minerals serve as a strong pull factor for people from various regions, leading to increased population density. The dense population found in the Chhota Nagpur Plateau of Jharkhand and the nearby regions of Odisha is mainly attributed to the rich presence of mineral resources.
  6. Transport: Population growth is closely linked to the development of transport infrastructure. The northern plains of India, with their extensive and well-developed transport network, support a high population density. In contrast, the peninsular plateau, which has a moderately developed transport system, sees a moderate population density. Meanwhile, the Himalayan region, with its limited transport facilities, remains sparsely populated.
  7. Climate: Climate plays an equally vital role as terrain in shaping population distribution. Among all climatic elements, rainfall and temperature are the most influential in determining where people settle. Human habitation is largely constrained by climatic conditions. Harsh climates, such as the extreme cold of the Himalayas or the intense heat and aridity of the Thar Desert, tend to deter dense settlement. Conversely, regions with a moderate climate are more conducive to supporting larger populations.
  8. Soil: In India, fertile soils support dense populations, while poor soils lead to sparse settlements. The northern plains (alluvial soil), coastal plains, and Deccan Plateau (black soil) sustain high densities, whereas deserts, mountains, and laterite soil areas remain sparsely populated. Advances in agricultural technology may change this pattern over time.
