Solution

Jumping events: The four jumping events are long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault.

High jump: In high jump, an athlete runs towards a crossbar and attempts to clear it without dislodging it. The athlete takes off from one foot, and speed, flexibility and coordination are important.

  1. Approach: The athlete runs towards the bar, usually along a curved approach.
  2. Take-off: The athlete plants one foot and drives the body upwards.
  3. Bar clearance: The athlete uses a suitable technique to pass over the crossbar.
  4. Landing: The athlete lands safely on the landing area, generally on the shoulders and back when using the Fosbury Flop.

The Fosbury Flop is the most popular technique. The athlete approaches the bar on a curve, takes off from one foot, turns the back towards the bar, arches the body over it and lands on the shoulders and back. Other techniques include the scissor jump, western roll and straddle technique.

A jump is a foul if the athlete dislodges the bar or touches the ground beyond the uprights before clearing it. Three consecutive failures at a height disqualify the athlete.
