Draw a line segment AB of length 7 cm. Construct the locus of a point P such that area of triangle PAB is 14 cm2.

Solution

Let the height of ΔPAB = h cm.

So, area of triangle = `1/2`​ × base × height

= 14 = `1/2 xx 7 xx h`

= 14 `xx 2/7 = h`

= h = `28/7`

= h = 4 cm

∴ The locus of point P consists of two straight lines (CD and EF in the diagram) drawn parallel to AB at a distance of 4 cm.
