Solution

Yes, India is vulnerable to earthquakes. The country lies close to the boundary where the Indian Plate is moving towards the Eurasian Plate. This collision is responsible for the formation of the Himalayas and also causes frequent seismic activity.

  1. The Himalayan region (Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh)
  2. The North-Eastern states
  3. The Kutch region of Gujarat
  4. Parts of Bihar
  5. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

These regions are more vulnerable because they are located near active fault lines and tectonic plate boundaries, where earthquakes occur more frequently. During an earthquake, strong shaking can cause buildings, bridges, roads and other structures to collapse, putting many lives at risk. In densely populated areas, people may become trapped under the debris. Earthquakes can also cause landslides, fires and damage to transport and communication systems. Poorly built structures and a lack of awareness or preparedness can make the situation worse. Therefore, strong earthquake-resistant buildings and proper disaster preparedness are important to reduce the loss of lives and property.
