Solution
- Shakespeare probably wrote Julius Caesar in 1599, and it may have been one of the first plays performed at the newly built Globe Theatre.
- Shakespeare’s main historical source was Sir Thomas North’s English translation of Plutarch’s Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans.
- Shakespeare used material from Plutarch’s lives of Julius Caesar, Brutus and Antony while creating the play.
- Caesar’s assassination takes place only about halfway through the play. The remaining part shows the consequences of his death, including political conflict and civil war.
- The play presents an important conflict between Caesar’s growing individual power and the Roman republican ideal defended by characters such as Brutus and Cassius.
- Shakespeare also uses Roman history, omens, supernatural events, public speeches and personal relationships to make the historical story more dramatic.
