Solution
Urbanisation in India has gradually increased since independence in 1947. In the early years, the focus was mainly on rural development, so urban growth was relatively slow. However, the establishment of public sector industries, government offices, and planned cities like Chandigarh led to the growth of urban centres. A significant change occurred after the economic reforms of 1991. Liberalisation and the growth of the IT and service sectors attracted people from rural areas to cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Gurugram in search of better employment opportunities. As a result, cities started expanding rapidly, and the population in urban areas increased significantly. Metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai turned into megacities with massive urban agglomerations. While this shift improved economic growth and created more job opportunities, it also brought challenges like overcrowding, slums, pollution, and pressure on infrastructure. Thus, the trend of urbanisation in post-independent India shows a clear move from rural living towards urban lifestyles, especially after 1991, shaping the socio-economic structure of the country.
