Solution
Prejudice does not develop naturally; it is influenced by a variety of social, psychological, and cultural variables. These are known as the factors of prejudice. The main determinants are the following:
- Socialization: Children acquire prejudiced ideas from their parents, teachers, peers, and the community. If children witness partial words or discriminatory behaviour, they tend to absorb and adopt similar attitudes.
- Cultural Beliefs and Norms: Cultural traditions and cultural beliefs frequently promote stereotypes and discriminatory actions. In such situations, discrimination becomes socially acceptable and difficult to challenge.
- Stereotyping: Stereotypes are limiting and simplistic ideas about groups. They ignore individual differences and spread broad, often unfavourable, perspectives on entire societies.
- Economic and Social Competition: When diverse groups fight for scarce resources such as jobs, housing, and education, tensions rise. This competitiveness can lead to scapegoating, which is when one group blames another for social or economic difficulties.
- Lack of Intergroup Contact: Ignorance and a lack of direct touch with members of other groups lead to increased reliance on misinformation. Positive and cooperative intergroup contacts can help eliminate prejudice.
- Personality Factors: Individuals with authoritarian personality traits such as rigidity, regulation, and hostility are more likely to hold prejudiced beliefs.
- Emotional Factors: Prejudice might also result from emotional needs. Fear, frustration, and confusion can cause people to project their fears onto others, maintaining prejudiced attitudes.
- Institutional Support: Social structures, laws, and policies may sustain or maintain prejudice by validating discrimination or providing uneven chances.
