1. Costly: Air transport is the costliest mode of transport. The cost of operation and maintenance of aerodromes and aeroplanes is very high. Therefore, air transport is suitable only for goods of high value relative to their bulk and weight.
2. Limited capacity: The load-bearing capacity of an aeroplane is limited. Therefore, it is not suitable for carrying bulky and heavy goods.
3. Risky: The risk of accidents and plane crashes is high in air transport. Even a minor mechanical issue or a bird strike can destroy a plane carrying all passengers and cargo.
4. Climate barriers: Aeroplanes can fly only in clear weather. During heavy rains, fog, snow, etc., flights are cancelled. Air transport is, therefore, uncertain and unreliable.
5. Regulations: Air transport is subject to international rules and regulations. Moreover, a very high degree of training and care is required on the part of air crew.
6. Inflexibility: Air service is available only between aerodromes. Goods have to be brought to and carried from the air terminals. Loading and unloading cannot take place according to the user’s convenience since an aeroplane cannot land on any ground. Extra time and expenditure are required for loading and unloading goods at the aerodromes.
