Rural settlements in the plains are the most common type of human habitation in India. These settlements are primarily located in regions like the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Brahmaputra Valley, and the coastal plains, where the land is flat, fertile, and well-connected.

1. Pattern of Settlements: Settlements in the plains are generally clustered (compact) in form. Houses are built close to each other due to the easy availability of flat land, community living, and security reasons. In some areas, linear or rectangular patterns are also seen along roads or rivers.
2. Favourable Physical Conditions: Plains offer flat terrain, fertile soil, good climate, and access to water, making them highly suitable for agriculture and dense population. These factors support the growth of larger and more organised villages compared to hilly or desert regions.
3. House Structure and Layout: Houses are mostly permanent, made of bricks, cement, and tiles. The villages are often planned with narrow lanes (galis), central markets, schools, temples, and other facilities. Some villages may have specific areas for different caste groups, reflecting social structure.
4. Occupations and Economy: The main occupation in plain areas is agriculture, due to fertile land and the availability of irrigation. People grow crops like wheat, rice, sugarcane, and vegetables. Apart from farming, some are engaged in animal husbandry, trade, and small-scale industries.
