  1. Stem cells are special cells that can develop into many different types of cells in the human body. They can divide continuously and replace damaged or dead cells. As shown in the figure, stem cells can develop into cells of the brain (neurons), bone, heart, liver, and intestine.
  2. These cells are very useful in regenerative medicine because they help repair damaged tissues and may be used to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, blood disorders, spinal cord injuries, and heart diseases.
  3. Organ transplantation is the process of replacing a damaged or diseased organ with a healthy organ from a donor. Commonly transplanted organs include the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and intestines. Organ transplantation can save the lives of patients whose organs have stopped functioning properly.
  4. Stem cell research is also helping scientists develop new ways to repair or even grow tissues and organs, which may reduce the shortage of donor organs in the future.
