Source Sun radiation comes from the Sun and reaches Earth as electromagnetic energy. Nuclear radiation is emitted by unstable atomic nuclei during radioactive decay.
Common forms It includes visible light, infrared radiation and ultraviolet radiation. It includes ionising emissions such as alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays.
Occurrence Sun radiation is a natural source of energy and is received continuously by Earth. Nuclear radiation may come from radioactive materials, nuclear accidents or radioactive fallout.
Effects Excess exposure to ultraviolet radiation can damage skin and eyes. Exposure to high levels can damage cells, cause illness such as cancer, and produce genetic effects.
