Solution
Plant leaves respire continuously through tiny pores called stomata. Oxygen from the air diffuses inside to power cells. The net gas exchange shifts between day and night. During the day, photosynthesis reuses all the carbon dioxide produced by respiration. Thus, oxygen diffuses out while carbon dioxide diffuses in. At night, photosynthesis stops completely in the absence of sunlight. Consequently, oxygen diffuses in, and waste carbon dioxide diffuses out.
