In the anther, the microsporangium's sporogenous tissue cells serve as possible MMCs or PMCs. They go through meiosis and produce four tetrads of microspores or pollen grains as a result. When the pollen grains are still in place, they split apart from the tetrads and produce two-celled male gametophytes. The pollen is released from the anther in most angiosperms during two-celled stages, but in some, it occurs at three-celled stages as the generative cell divides to produce two male gametes.
