Solution
The equatorial region is centered on the Equator and extends roughly between about 0° and 10° north and south latitude, occurring as lowland tropical zones such as the Amazon Basin and adjacent coastal lowlands in South America, the Congo (Zaire) Basin and the Guinea coast in Africa, and the Indo‑Malayan and New Guinea lowlands (Indonesia, Malaysia, southern Philippines and Papua New Guinea). It lies in the torrid (tropical) belt where the sun’s rays are highly direct, days and nights are nearly equal year‑round, and the climate is characteristically hot and very wet with heavy, mainly convectional rainfall and average temperatures around the mid‑20s to 30 °C.
