Solution
- During the day, both photosynthesis and respiration occur in the leaves.
- Photosynthesis occurs at a much higher rate than respiration because sunlight is available.
- The leaves take in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere through the stomata for photosynthesis.
- Oxygen (O2) produced during photosynthesis diffuses out of the leaves through the stomata.
- Some of the oxygen produced is used in respiration, but most of it is released into the atmosphere.
- Therefore, during daytime, the net exchange of gases is that plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
