Solution
The human brain is divided into three primary parts: Forebrain, Midbrain, and Hindbrain.
1. Forebrain:
- Cerebrum: It constitutes the largest part of the brain and is divided into two cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. Its outer cortex has folds (gyri and sulci) composed of grey matter responsible for intelligence, memory, reasoning, and sensory processing, while the inner white matter facilitates central communication.
- Diencephalon: It comprises the Thalamus, which coordinates sensory and motor signals, and the Hypothalamus, which contains neurosecretory cells, secretes hypothalamic hormones, and regulates body temperature.
2. Midbrain (Mesencephalon): It is located between the forebrain and hindbrain, it is responsible for coordinating eye movements as well as visual and auditory processing.
3. Hindbrain:
- Pons: It is located beneath the midbrain, and it connects the forebrain to the cerebellum and medulla oblongata, regulating activities such as sleep, taste, and swallowing.
- Cerebellum: It is known as the 'little brain', and it has a convoluted surface that coordinates muscular activity, locomotion, and maintains the body's posture and equilibrium.
- Medulla Oblongata: It forms the triangular lower base connecting to the spinal cord and controls vital involuntary activities including heartbeat, respiration, peristalsis, and gastric secretions.
