1. In 1885, Congress began as a pressure group for the educated, professional, and business classes. Over time, it grew into a large force.
2. At first, the party was mostly composed of English-speaking, upper-class, and upper-caste people, including the elite of cities.
3. Eventually, the organization’s leadership expanded beyond those focused on farms and rural areas.
4. It had space for both revolutionary and pacifist ideas, as well as for conservative and radical ideas, extreme and reasonable views, the left, the right, and all the shades of the middle.
5. The Congress party was very well organized, and in the first election, it started running for office before the other parties could even come up with a plan.
6. From the national level down to the neighborhood level, it was well organized and open to everyone.
