In chapter 'On the face of it', Derry is a fourteen-year-old boy with a very low self-esteem. Since his face got burnt by acid and was scared, he avoided the company of people. He thought that people are afraid of him and pity him. When he sneaked into Mr. Lamb's garden and had a short conversation with him, it became the turning point in his life.
Mr. Lamb's attitude towards life changed Derry's life. In spite of losing one leg in the war, Mr Lamb had a positive spirit. He did not care what people thought about him and did whatever he liked. He befriended Derry and encouraged him to love his life the way it is. He made Derry understand that the world is full of positive and negative things and he must learn to accept both of them. This helped Derry to transform.
The brief association of both the characters boosted Derry's self-confidence and helped him respect his own self. Derry realised that he is self-dependent, respectable and full of hope. This hope helped Derry undergo a remarkable change. He realised that his looks are not important. It is not important how the world looks at him, but it is important how you see the world. This transformation in Derry is permanent because the death of Mr Lamb did not take him back to his secluded life.
