Exfoliation is a type of physical weathering where the outer layers of rock peel off in concentric layers due to temperature fluctuations. Rocks, being poor conductors of heat, expand and contract more on the surface than inside, causing the outer layers to separate and peel away like layers of an onion. This process forms smooth, rounded boulders called tors.
