Solution
Given: A side PQ = 4.5 cm to construct a square PQRS. Use straightedge and compass.
Step-wise calculation (construction steps):
- Draw the line segment PQ = 4.5 cm.
- At point P, construct a perpendicular to PQ use compass/straightedge. Mark the perpendicular line as PM.
- At point Q, construct a perpendicular to PQ use compass/straightedge. Mark that perpendicular as QN.
- On PM, from P measure and mark PS = 4.5 cm.
- On QN, from Q measure and mark QR = 4.5 cm.
- Join S and R to form SR. Now join PS, SR and RQ to complete the four sides.
PQRS with PQ = PS = SR = RQ = 4.5 cm and each interior angle 90° is the required square.
