Solution

  • A natural pearl is formed inside a pearl oyster. When a tiny foreign particle or parasite enters the oyster, it irritates the soft body. The oyster protects itself by covering the particle with many thin layers of nacre (mother-of-pearl). Over time, these layers build up and form a pearl.
  • The oceanic organism that develops a pearl is the pearl oyster, which is a type of mollusc.
  • In India, natural pearl oysters are mainly found in the Gulf of Mannar along the south-eastern coast, especially near Tamil Nadu.
